Becoming an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer is a dream for many young aspiring individuals in India. The IAS is one of the most prestigious and sought-after civil services in the country. The IAS officers are responsible for the implementation of government policies, administration of governance, and the development of the country. The journey from an aspirant to an IAS officer is a rigorous and challenging one, but it is not impossible.
To begin with, the eligibility criteria to apply for the IAS exam require a minimum age of 21 years and a maximum of 32 years at the time of appearing for the exam. The candidates must have a bachelor’s degree from a recognized university and be an Indian citizen.
The first step towards becoming an IAS officer is to appear for the Civil Services Examination (CSE), which is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) every year. The examination consists of three phases: the Preliminary examination, the Main examination, and the Personality Test.
The Preliminary examination consists of two papers, General Studies and Civil Service Aptitude Test (CSAT). The mains exam consists of nine papers, including an essay and four general studies papers, two optional papers, and a language paper. After clearing the mains examination, candidates have to appear for the Personality Test, commonly known as the interview.
The journey from a civil service aspirant to an IAS officer requires hard work, dedication, and a never-give-up attitude. Candidates must have a deep understanding of current affairs, Indian history, and geography, and be able to build analytical and communication skills. The key to success in the CSE lies in developing a consistent study schedule, practicing previous year’s question papers, and revising one’s notes regularly.
The journey towards becoming an IAS officer is not an easy one. Candidates must be prepared to face many obstacles and challenges along the way. It requires a lot of focus and determination to succeed in this highly competitive exam. It is important to stay motivated and be self-disciplined throughout the journey.
Once a candidate clears the CSE, they will be posted as probationary IAS officers for two years, during which they receive comprehensive training in various aspects of administration, including economics, public policy, and management. Thereafter, IAS officers are posted to different districts/ states across the country.
