SSC CGL Eligibility criteria

The eligibility criteria for the SSC CGL (Staff Selection Commission – Combined Graduate Level) exam include requirements related to nationality, age limit, educational qualifications, and physical standards (for certain posts). Below are the detailed eligibility criteria:

Nationality:

A candidate must be either:

  1. An Indian citizen, or
  2. A subject of Nepal, or
  3. A subject of Bhutan, or
  4. A Tibetan refugee who came over to India before 1st January 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India, or
  5. A person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania (formerly Tanganyika and Zanzibar), Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia, and Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.

Candidates belonging to categories 2, 3, 4, and 5 above must have a certificate of eligibility issued by the Government of India.

Age Limit:

The age limits vary for different posts and are usually between 18 to 32 years. The crucial date for age determination is usually 1st August of the year of the examination. The general age limits for various posts are as follows:

  1. Assistant Audit Officer/Assistant Accounts Officer: 18-30 years
  2. Junior Statistical Officer: Up to 32 years
  3. Sub Inspector (NIA): Up to 30 years
  4. Sub Inspector (Central Bureau of Narcotics): 18-27 years
  5. Other Posts: Typically 18-27 years, 20-30 years, or 18-30 years, depending on the specific job profile

Age Relaxation:

  • SC/ST: 5 years
  • OBC: 3 years
  • PwD (Unreserved): 10 years
  • PwD (OBC): 13 years
  • PwD (SC/ST): 15 years
  • Ex-Servicemen: 3 years after deduction of the military service rendered from the actual age as on the closing date.
  • Defense Personnel disabled in operation: 3 years (8 years for SC/ST)
  • Central Government Civilian Employees: Up to 40 years (45 years for SC/ST)
  • Widows/Divorced Women/Women judicially separated and not remarried: Up to 35 years (40 years for SC/ST)

Educational Qualifications:

The educational qualifications required vary by post:

  1. Assistant Audit Officer/Assistant Accounts Officer:
    • Essential: Bachelor’s Degree from a recognized university or institute.
    • Desirable: CA/CS/MBA/Cost & Management Accountant/Masters in Commerce/Masters in Business Studies.
  2. Junior Statistical Officer:
    • Bachelor’s Degree in any subject from a recognized university or institute with at least 60% in Mathematics at the 12th standard level, or
    • Bachelor’s Degree in any subject with Statistics as one of the subjects at degree level.
  3. Statistical Investigator Grade-II:
    • Bachelor’s Degree in any subject with Statistics as one of the subjects from a recognized university or institute. The candidate must have studied Statistics as a subject in all three years of the graduation course.
  4. Other Posts:
    • Bachelor’s Degree from a recognized university or equivalent.

Physical Standards:

For certain posts, like Inspector (Central Excise/Examiner/Preventive Officer) and Sub-Inspector in CBI and NIA, candidates must meet specific physical standards and pass a physical efficiency test. The physical standards generally include:

  • Height:
    • Male: 157.5 cm (minimum)
    • Female: 152 cm (minimum)
  • Chest: 81 cm (with a minimum expansion of 5 cm) for male candidates.
  • Weight: Proportionate to height and age as per medical standards.

Candidates must also pass vision tests and other physical endurance tests as required by the specific post.
