Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC) conducts Group 1 examinations for recruitment into various government departments. The Group 1 exam is the most coveted and sought-after examination conducted by TNPSC. Every year, thousands of aspirants apply for this exam to secure government jobs.
The Group 1 examination is conducted in three stages – Prelims, Main, and Interview. The examination pattern for each stage is different, and it is essential to understand the pattern to prepare for the examination.
Preliminary Examination Pattern:
The preliminary examination consists of two papers – General Studies Paper I and General Studies Paper II. Both papers are objective type, and each paper carries a maximum of 200 marks. The time duration for each paper is three hours.
General Studies Paper I:
This paper covers topics like history, geography, economics, polity, current affairs, science, and technology. It consists of 150 questions, and each correct answer carries 1.5 marks. There is a negative marking of 0.5 marks for each incorrect answer.
General Studies Paper II:
This paper tests the candidates’ aptitude skills in areas like mental ability, data interpretation, decision-making, and logical reasoning. This paper consists of 100 questions, and each correct answer carries 2.5 marks. There is negative marking of 1.5 marks for each incorrect answer.
Main Examination Pattern:
The Main Examination is descriptive type, and it consists of three papers – General Studies Paper I, General Studies Paper II, and General Studies Paper III. Each paper carries a maximum of 250 marks, and the time duration for each paper is three hours.
General Studies Paper I:
This paper covers topics like history, geography, economics, polity, current affairs, science, and technology. The paper consists of 250 marks and descriptive type questions.
General Studies Paper II:
This paper covers different aspects of the Indian Constitution, Indian politics, Tamil culture, society, and rural development. The paper consists of 250 marks and descriptive type questions.
General Studies Paper III:
This paper covers topics like economics, science, technology, environment, and international relations. The paper consists of 250 marks and descriptive type questions.
Interview:
The candidates who clear the Main Examination are called for an interview. The interview carries a maximum of 100 marks, and it is conducted to assess the candidates’ personality, communication skills, and general awareness.
